Thick & Coarse
Thick and coarse hair can be notoriously hard to manage. If the hair is also frizzy then your styling regime will probably take longer than most. With the right hair products and tools the hair can be softened and flattened down to enable you to have the hair style you want without the effort.
Always be mindful of your face shape when choosing a hairstyle as not all hairstyles will suit your face shape.
See our Face Shapes page for tips on what would suit your particular face shape, whether it be oval, heart, round, square, or long.
Hairstyle ideas:
An ideal cut for this texture is a shoulder length choppy cut with long layers possibly flicked out at the bottom, with a long sweepy fringe.
Keep hair on the longer side as thick hair can tend to look like it's growing outwards rather then downwards, if it’s cut too short.
Choppy, wispy cuts slim down hair. Avoid rounded blunt layers as these only add to the heaviness.
Avoid very short haircuts, as your hair can look too full if not sufficiently thinned out.
Long layers are good for taking weight out of the hair but make sure they are kept long, as short layers for this hair texture are hard to control.
Ensure coarse hair is sufficiently long enough to be easily blow-dried.
Wispy fringes and layers around the face give the appearance of thinner hair.
*A good tip is to have the underneath hair heavily chopped into and thinned out, while leaving the top section free from layers and thinning out. This creates a slimmer look without having the effort of short layers.
