Hair Loss

Losing your hair can be extremely devastating, for men and women.

On average a person can naturally shed up to 50-100 hairs per day, but this can be considerably more for a person suffering with excessive hair loss, and the hair can sometimes feel like it is coming out in clumps, yet not getting replaced with new hair.

A good way to check for excessive hair loss is to look for large amounts of hair down the shower/bath plug hole, in your hair brush, on your pillow and on your clothes.

Also if you gently pull at a small section of your hair and more than one or two hairs come away then you may be experiencing excessive hair loss.

Diet:

A very unhealthy diet can be linked with hair loss. To get the best out of your hair your diet should contain some of the following:

ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS: found in chicken, fish and eggs

IRON: found in liver, beans, lentils and green veg,

ZINC: found in oysters, beef, lamb and crabmeat

Dramatic weight loss can also be a cause of hair loss, so if you are thinking of crash dieting, think again. Instead try to lose weight gradually while still keeping your diet high in some of the foods above.

Pregnancy:

This is a very common problem caused by the changes in the levels of the hormone estrogen.

When your body has high levels of estrogen, as it does when pregnant, the number of hairs that fall out drops dramatically leaving hair feeling thicker and fuller.

After giving birth the estrogen levels drop and the hair tends to do all the falling out that it didn't do before. As so much comes out at once, it can grow back in tufts and patches.

Hormone imbalance:

This can usually be noticed by the amount of body hair you have. If you have excessive body hair, men or women then it could be that you have a hormone imbalance which can be a cause of hair loss from the scalp.

Another sign of a hormone imbalance is if you suffer with skin conditions such as acne or seborrhea.

Stress and trauma:

In times of stress, the body produces chemicals which can send signals to the hair follicles which then send hair into a resting stage, where the hair stops growing.

The number of hairs that naturally shed stay the same but as no hair is growing back, the hair can become thinner. This is usually only a temporary problem, however at times of prolonged stress this can go on for some time, usually until the stress subsides.

Hereditary:

It is said that you are more likely to suffer with hair loss if this is already a problem within your family. Studies have shown that you have more chance of hair loss, if the hair loss is a problem on your mothers side, however there is still a chance from your fathers side as a hair loss gene is also passed on from the their side too.

Medication:

Some medications especially any hormone treatments can be a major contributor to hair loss. Some of these include the birth pill, chemotherapy’s, hormone therapy’s and steroids.
